Description
The ChrisCraft 17' listed Was Built in Oct. 1939 to be sold as a 1940. I bought it in 1984 as a self project. and didn’t start work on it until 1985 and it became a 13 year project as I was also running our business during that time. Also comes with custom made cover.
Now the story-Stripped the hull, sent out the instruments to calibrate and reface, also all the chrome and stainless to be redone, polished or replaced. The cutwater was sent out to be straightened, most of the frame in the engine area had to be replaced, all the wood on the interior, including the dash board, the port side wood was replaced and two planks on the starboard side and the stern side and the top side, except the cover boards, they were still good. the bottom redone and used 3M 5200. rebuilt the steering wheel, and rewired the whole boat so I could go 12 volt (which I did) Put in electronic ignition.installed an automatic or manual bilge pump and blower to evacuate the engine compartment, two switches under the dash for the bilge pump and evacuation blower, had the engine overhauled and run the engine on an engine stand. The seating is Marine grade leather, the flooring V grade rubber, then on the staining is nine coats of Petits Captains varnish. This boat has been kept in a very cool garage with a fan and a dehumidifier never over 72 degrees in the summer or over 45 degrees, excpt when working there at maybe 65 degrees then back to 45.This boat sets on a custom built Integrity trailer which matches the boat, It was built in Nunica,Michigan. They build a lot of trailers for wooden boats. That is about the restoring information that I can think about right now.
I have taken five awards with this boat.
1.Algonac Mi. a third place in my class.
2.Higgins Lake, peoples choice.
3.Presque Isle a second place.
4.Hessel-Les Chenaux Islands (the biggest show in Michigan from 140 to 175 boats)
A.took the Frank Bronson for non-professional award out of 21 boats also took a second
in the pre-war era. Was asked if I would be willing to show the boat in Cobo Hall in Detroit for the following February in 2000 show and they asked for it again in 2008 this show at Cobo is a big big show with big big boats this show with our Little woodies in Michigan is done through Michigan chapter of the ACBS.
