Lake Michigan spans the coastline of 4 states.
As the second largest of the Great Lakes in North America, Lake Michigan spans the entire west coast of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, and it is the only one of the five Great Lakes that is located entirely within the United States. Its expansive shoreline is scattered with incredible dunes, some reaching as high as 450 feet above the sparkling waters of the lake. There are 59 lighthouses that stand on the beaches of Lake Michigan, which are the remnants of the shipping industry.
