Lake Minnetonka is a collection of 16 interconnecting lakes with about 23 named bays and areas. The lake is situated approximately 15 miles west-southwest of Minneapolis, Minnesota and with over 14,000 acres of water, a depth of 113 feet and a shoreline of 125 miles, there is plenty to explore on Lake Minnetonka.
The first people who inhabited the Lake Minnetonka area were indigenous natives who migrated to the region at the end of the last ice age. In the early 18th century, Native Americans used Lake Minnetonka as a fish source and the surrounding areas for its game and edible plants. None of the tribes actually settled around the lake, but then around 1822, the first recorded people of European descent discovered Lake Minnetonka, and in 1860 the area was heavily populated with prospectors and their families.
In the late 1800's, several grand hotels and resorts were built, making Lake Minnetonka a place to visit, but these soon closed when the depression hit the State. Early 1900’s saw a resurgence of rapid settlement, as a community in which to live and a place to have lakeshore cabins began.
This beautiful Lake offers something for everyone. In the Summer, Lake Minnetonka is a very popular place, as there are plenty of activities on the Lake and its surrounding areas of parkland. For many residents, as well as visitors, Spring and fall offer a more peaceful tranquility, and the Lake attracts a different kind of visitor in the Winter with snowmobiling or ice fishing as its main attractions. With activities such as Boating, sailing, fishing, yacht clubs, swimming, kayaking, ice fishing, Lake Minnetonka has a whole year’s worth of swimming, splashing, pedaling and paddling, along with drinking and dining at many waterfront bars and restaurants.
There is a lot of fun to be had on the water, from taking a steamboat ride to enjoying the spectacular shoreline views on a charter cruise. Boats of all sizes and horsepower may be legally launched on Lake Minnetonka, but speed and noise restrictions do apply. Fishing is a dream on the lake with many species such as; Bluegills, crappie, largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Muskellunge (Muskie) and walleye.
There are plenty of Marinas that offer such services as; boat rental, boat launches and slips, boat repairs and fuel services. The Regional park offers access to a public launch.
