Boating in Lake Mead Nevada

Lake Mead is
located near Las Vegas.

Located on the Colorado River, Lake Mead, Nevada is about 25 miles from Las Vegas, and runs through both the States of Nevada and Arizona. Lake Mead is actually a man-made reservoir that provides water to Arizona, California, Nevada and to parts of Mexico, where farmlands and nearly 20 million benefit from its waters. Spanning over 110 miles long in Nevada and Arizona with 759 miles of shoreline, and a depth of 532 feet, Lake Mead offers great wildlife, beautiful scenery, and plenty of activities.

The History of Lake Mead.

As pioneers began settling around the Colorado River in 1865, homes, farms and stores were built and as the town grew, the town of St Thomas was born. In 1931 work began on damming up the Colorado river, the Hoover Dam, and the reservoir it created became Lake Mead. This was completed in 1936. Unfortunately, by 1938 all the residents had left after the waters of Lake Mead overcame the community.

Attractions in Lake Mead

Lake Mead is ideal for boating and water sports, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, sunbathing and fishing. In fact, Lake Mead is said to be one of the nations best sport fishing grounds with plenty of fishing areas and some great catches; including the striped bass, largemouth and smallmouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, crappie, green sunfish and rainbow trout, all you will need is a license to fish in the Lake.

From hiking trails that lead to hot springs to navigating the waters with scuba diving for World War II B-29 bomber and the sunken city of St Thomas, there is plenty to do on the Lake. Obviously playing on the water is one of the most popular activities, and boaters can enjoy the thrill of open water or relax in a private cove. With plenty of boat ramps and launches around the lake, you will be on the water in no time, but you will need a vehicle pass to enter the park and a vessel pass for each vessel to launch.
