Located 20 miles north of Charlotte, Lake Norman is the largest man-made body of freshwater in North Carolina. Completed in 1964 as part of the construction of the Cowans Ford Dam of Duke Energy, it is fed by the Catawba River and drains into Mountain Island Lake.
With around 520 miles of shoreline, it is the perfect place to go for a small trip or quick getaway any time of the year.
The transformation of Lake Norman began over 60 years ago. People had lived, worked and died around this area before it was bought by the Duke Power Company to build their hydroelectric dam creating electricity for North Carolina's growing economy In the latter half of the 1800's and shut down in the 1950's for the formation of the lake, the Long Island Cotton Mill and Mill Village's ruins remain resting at the lake bottom today!
From nature trails to public swimming access, Lake Norman has a lot of amenities, but with so many acres and miles of shoreline, the lake is best seen by boat. There are Several marinas along the shores of the Lake, with boat launches, boat slips, boat storage, boat rentals, boat repairs, and gas stops for when you need to refuel.
Lake Norman is a haven for water- lovers, and it's a water-sports paradise. Whether you enjoy the thrill of water skiing or are able to wakeboard across its huge expanse of water, there are plenty of ways to have fun on this beautiful body of blue waves!
There is plenty of fishing too with catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, striped bass, and yellow and white perch all gracing the lake.
