The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore features 21 islands, sea caves, lighthouses, and 12 miles of car-accessible mainland, all spread across 720 square miles on Lake Superior. Whether you’re paddling a sea kayak, sailing, hiking, or exploring historical sites, there are numerous ways to enjoy the park’s beauty and solitude. The islands are accessible only by water, so visiting the entire park in one trip can be challenging.
Lake Superior has some great cultural and historical sites to explore. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum reveals the maritime history of the region, including the Edmund Fitzgerald. You can also visit the elegant Glensheen Mansion in Duluth
Be sure to see the Split Rock Lighthouse in Two Harbors and the Grand Portage National Monument for stunning views and historical insights. For a step back in time, Fort William Historical Park in Thunder Bay offers a glimpse into the fur trade era.
With a Lake this size, it's hard to pick out one or two restaurants on the water, and as you can guess there are a few! But there are some stand-outs. Fitzgeralds, known locally as The Fitz, is one of them, which has an amazing menu which includes smokehouse beef brisket served alongside decades-aged whiskey. As a bonus, you can also stay the night too!
Right by Cinder Pond Marina you will find The Iron Bay Restaurant & Drinkery. This great eatery is housed in an 1872 foundry, and is the go-to spot for fresh Lake Superior whitefish. This mild, meaty fish shines in dishes like whitefish tater tots.

Nearby Attractions
When you’re done boating, there are plenty of nearby attractions to check out. Duluth, Minnesota, is a lively town with cool spots like the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center and the historic Aerial Lift Bridge.

The lake itself does not have specific operating hours, but boaters should be mindful of local regulations and weather conditions. Popular access points include marinas and boat ramps in towns like Duluth, Grand Marais, and Bayfield, and there are also four boat launch sites for public use.
