Review:

As I walked through the Silverton 372 Motor Yacht, I couldn't figure out how they had fitted so much space into what is really a 37' by 14' hull package. Two full staterooms, both with heads and stall showers. A large two level saloon with separate dining and entertainment areas and a comfortable galley. I suppose it has something to do with computer design, which allows designers to search out empty spaces and fill them effectively, as well as enabling them to "stack" the various living areas to get the maximum from each level. But all you and I really need to know is that this is one spacious boat for it's size. Heck, there are a lot of 50-footers a couple of decades old out there that don't have this much room.

With ample beam, 17-degrees of transom deadrise, and hard chines, the 372 Motoryacht is surprisingly stable, both at rest and even in the Gulf Stream off Miami in a cross sea. The aft deck can be boarded either through the gates on each side or up easy steps from the transom. Our test boat had an extended transom platform to carry a personal watercraft or dinghy and featured a huge bin to store deck gear and shower power cords as well as a hot-and-cold shower.

The aft deck includes a standard wet bar for entertaining, and the fully molded weatherboards not only provide privacy but make a full enclosure both secure and weathertight. The fiberglass hardtop is fully finished on the underside with built-in lighting and is sturdy enough to carry a dinghy and davit.

The two-level saloon is spacious and comfortable with good visibility through the wrap-around windows, and a decor of cool shades of mauve with bright cherrywood trim. The aft level has a curved settee with cocktail table to starboard and a built-in entertainment center with JVC stereo to port, as well as room for another chair. A cleverly designed ottoman can be easily converted from a padded footrest to a wood-topped cocktail table by turning over the lid.

One step down is the galley and dinette level, with a curved dinette to port and the L-shaped galley to starboard. The beauty of this arrangement is that, without bulkheads, it makes the salon immense. Guests sitting in the couch and dinette areas aren't out of touch, and anyone in the galley is also a part of this big, airy room.

The galley is thoughtfully designed, with ample Corian countertops and a big sink. The stand-up refrigerator is home-sized, and a three-burner stove with oven and microwave are standard. The stowage is considerable, with drawers and lockers under and over the counter area, a pull-out pantry that is a real space-saver, and even a rotating locker to make the most of a difficult corner space.

Forward is a guest stateroom that has an athwartship berth, two oversized hanging lockers, and a full head with separate stall shower. I was pleased to see a solid door hidden in a pocket rather than flimsy accordion doors that provide little privacy or insulation. For once, guests won't feel unwelcome in this comfortable cabin.

The master stateroom aft is even better, with an innerspring mattress, padded headboard (which pulls out for storage behind), and bedside table. There is ample walk around room on both sides of the bed, and the ensuite head spans the port side, with ample storage and a large stall shower with seat.

On deck and still puzzling over the surprising space of the 372 MY, I found part of the answer on the flybridge. The cabin sides push all the way to the rails so the flybridge and salon below are huge. Stairs on both the port and starboard side lead to the foredeck, making access safe and easy for docking or anchoring. The crew is able to move easily from the bow to the stern without climbing ladders and, because the foredeck is surrounded by comfortably high rails and bulwarks, there is an added level of security even in rough weather. The foredeck has a recessed sun pad and our test boat had a Simpson-Lawrence anchor windlass feeding from the bow roller into a large anchor locker.

The helm area is comfortable, with an adjustable seat for the skipper and a bench seat next to it for three companions. Teleflex Sea Star steering with tilt wheel, Teleflex twin-lever throttle and shifts, and a full array of Faria gauges are centered in a large dash with plenty of room for electronics on each side. A clear panel in the hardtop gives the skipper full visibility of both aft corners for backing down and, with the forward bench seat at a lower level, there is excellent visibility forward even with a crowd of guests. There is cavernous stowage under the bridge eyebrow, with enough room to store a rolled-up inflatable, lifejackets, or deck gear and the bridge layout allows guests to move freely around without disturbing the skipper. An optional inside helm is available although, with a full enclosure, the flybridge would still be my choice for running the boat in all weather.

Our test boat was powered by the standard Crusader 454 XLI fuel injected gas V-8 of 320 shaft horsepower (Cat and Volvo diesels are optional), and access was excellent to all areas. The engine room has Pirelli non-slip flooring and is well-lit. The generator and twin air conditioning systems are under the galley/dinette area in a separate compartment that isolates sound and vibration so well that, when the generator was started, I thought it was the refrigerator kicking on. This is a very quiet boat, both with the generator alone and with the main engines.

Construction is excellent in all areas, with the wiring neatly loomed and labeled, good access to the ball-valve seacocks, and a solid fiberglass hull. Lockers are all fully lined, and even the bilge is get coated for a tidy and easily maintained finish. All windows are tempered safety glass, engine alarms and a fire extinguishing system are standard, and the boat is complete right down to dock lines and life jackets.

I ran the 372 MY out into the Gulf Stream off Miami, where she shouldered aside the lumpy swells and showed off her 28-plus-MPH performance. The side exhausts and good insulation qualities were reflected in the 83-decibel sound reading at 4000 RPM and, as I pointed out earlier, this boat is so quiet that normal conversation levels can be used on both the bridge and aft deck. At full and cruising speeds, there was no slamming of flat panels in the head seas, and the deck stayed dry throughout.

Silverton conducts numerous "focus groups" with owners, dealers and prospective buyers, and discovered that most boat owners are really "weekend warriors", using their boats as weekend getaways. For that reason, they want lots of storage, comfortable cabins and good living areas. Silverton has certainly met those requirements with the new 372 Motor Yacht..

When new the 372 carried a base price of $158,896 with the twin Crusader 454s plus the air conditioning/heating ($9993) and 6.5kW Kohler generator ($7980). Today listings range from around $80,000 to $120,000 depending on age and condition. The 372 MY going to catch the fancy of many new boat buyers, and that's no puzzlement.
