If you know, you know. Up for sale is an incredibly rare, meticulously maintained 2001 Toyota Epic S22 tournament towboat. These boats are legendary for being massively overbuilt—much like Toyota’s early Tundras—and offer unmatched reliability that leaves standard marine V8s in the dust.
This specific boat has a cool piece of action sports history: it was featured in the 2001 ESPN Gravity Games for wakeboarding. Despite its pedigree, it has lived a very easy life in recent years, used lightly just for pulling the kids on tubes.
The Mechanical Pedigree & Incredible Efficiency
At the heart of this Epic is the legendary 4.0L Lexus 1UZ-FE V8 engine (the same motor found in the Lexus LS400 series). Renowned by engineers as one of the most dependable engines ever built, it delivers a smooth 300HP and jumps on plane almost instantly.
Best of all, this boat literally sips fuel. It is incredibly efficient compared to traditional, heavy marine V8s—I have added as little as 3 gallons of fuel after a full day of tubing. To protect the fuel system and engine, it has been run exclusively on non-ethanol Recreational Fuel (Rec Fuel).
Condition & Maintenance
Extremely Low Hours: Only ~260 hours on the clock (very rare for a 2001).
Meticulous Stewardship: In my first year of ownership, I invested over $3,000 to ensure it was mechanically flawless, including replacing all coil packs, plugs, and performing comprehensive preventative maintenance.
Winterization: My marine mechanic noted that this engine's unique design drains so thoroughly it technically doesn't require winterizing—however, out of an abundance of caution and respect for the machine, it has been fully winterized every single year.
Mechanic Approved: Runs perfectly. Even my mechanic constantly remarks on its pristine condition and how incredibly well it runs.
What’s Included (Turn-Key Fun Package):
The Gear: Comes ready for the water with two tubes (a 2-person and a 3-person tube), plus the tow rope equipped with a booster/shock ball to keep the line out of the water.
Wake Enhancement: Includes ballast bags to add weight to the boat if you want to throw an absolute wall of a wake (though I never utilized them myself).
Wakeboard Tower: The original factory tower is currently uninstalled for lower-profile garage storage, but is included and easily reattached.
