Boating is one of the most popular summertime activities, and for good reason! The breeze in your hair while you watch the sunset over the water, an ice-cold beer to cool off with afterwards: it’s a perfect way to spend a day…Right?  But there are some things that can make or break your time on the water – like boat dock manners. We’re talking about how you handle yourself when getting ready to launch onto open waters!

On a busy summer day, a boat launch ramp can become quite congested. Not only is it intimidating for newbie boaters to pull a boat trailer, it’s also daunting to understand the strange dance that goes on at the dock! Every boater should understand that there are certain boat launch rules of etiquette that go a long way, and in doing so, prevent ramp rage!

Boating etiquette is key to having a fun time on the water. Follow these tips for an enjoyable launch and trip!
  • Prepare your boat before launch: The launch area can be a busy and stressful place. To keep the line moving, make sure you are ready to go when it is your turn with everything already in the boat so that you can focus on getting into water quickly.
  • Look left, Look right: If someone is coming into port just as you are preparing to head out, don’t block their path. Always check your surroundings.
  • Follow speed limits: Speeding around the waters of a harbor can be hazardous, so always make sure to respect ‘No Wake Zones’. These zones are put in place because they reduce collision risks and keep your boat away from any hazards that might lie onshore or off-shore.
  • Watch your lines: Be mindful of others’ lines and moorings so they don’t get tangled up with yours either.
  • Keep music low: Sound travels over water, and this can be disruptive to other boaters. It is recommended to avoid playing any loud music as a beginner because you should be acutely aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Be aware of safety flags: When you notice another boat has raised their orange flag, stay clear of their area, and be mindful that they have a passenger in the water. You should provide even more of a buffer in distance as they retrieve their passenger or likely prepare to tow them behind the boat.
  • Be courteous: Pay attention to your surroundings. Every big wave created has an effect on everyone else out there in their own little pond (so be kind!) The boating community is very friendly, and it is commonplace to wave to boaters as you pass them.

Boating is a great way to spend time with friends and family, but it’s important that everyone knows the rules of boating etiquette. Follow these tips for an enjoyable launch and trip!  Interested in learning more?
